I am trying to work on shapefiles with areas having names in Greek. The shapefiles does not operate normally probably due to the character set.
E.g. the municipality boundaries in Municipality boundaries (Kallikratis) - Όρια Δήμων (Καλλικράτης) - GEODATA.gov.gr.

I have tried all character sets provided without success.

    Hi Milosis,

Looks like you are using the 32 bit version of MapInfo Pro. The 64 bit versions of MapInfo Pro introduced full support for Unicode which means that the newer versions of MapInfo Pro will support these file names.

Tables can now support multiple language character set. They will be displayed properly in maps and browsers. Please try it in the 64 bit version of MapInfo Pro and it should work fine.

    Regards,
    Shweta

I tired opening your dataset in MapInfo Pro 17.0.3 and it opens with the Greek labels.

You will have to enable  "Encode Workspaces and Tab Files" checkbox in the Systems Settings Preference in Backstage

Now open the Shape file > In the Shape file information dialog > Choose the character set > Windows Greek

    The Maps looks like below:

    Hi Shweta & Milosis:

This operation does not require using an encoded tab file  or  MapInfo Extended format (NativeX table in x64)
The charset for this SHP Data is Windows Greek.
In 32 bit, if you are running MIPro on a Greek OS then you will probably already be using this as your system charset .  The 32 Bit versions of MIPro are not Unicode so in order to use  WindowsGreek  charset your OS needs to be in Greek locale if not already.
Windows Greek charset needs to be selected when opening  this SHP file  directly in MIPro.
The data also uses this Greek GGRS87 Coordinate system below, which is not in MIPro's list of projections, so I created this custom one  and am going to add it to the shipping  Mapinfow.PRJ file with MIPro in 2019.

    "--- Greek Coordinate Systems ---"
    "Greece Grid Onshore (GGRS87)\p2100", 8, 999 , 33, -199.87, 74.79, 246.62, 7, 24, 0, 0.9996, 500000, 0

I am attaching the result TAB file you can use in MIPro.

    Kind Regards,
    -Bill

Actually the coordinate system and datum was already present just under a different name in the PRJ file:
Just requires update to this entry to add  EPSG  code 2100

    "--- Hellenic Coordinate Systems ---"
    "HGRS87\p2100", 8, 153, 7, 24, 0, 0.9996, 500000, 0
