"How to create a map in Spectrum Spatial"

Whether you are accessing the Spectrum Spatial services via stages, web services and/or the application Spectrum Spatial Analyst - the out-of-box solution included in Spectrum Spatial - Spectrum Spatial requires access to data to perform his various functions and procedures. When the data involves map display or analysis, you need map definition, which includes information on display styles, zoom parameters and sequencing of layers.

Spectrum Spatial manages the map data and all the objects included in a map, like layers and their tables and views, in the Spectrum Spatial repository.

Spectrum Spatial Manager, the web-based application included in Spectrum Spatial - is the solution to manage the Repository. Examples of information in repositories are Named Maps, Named Tables, Named Views, Named Layers … and also Permissions and other important settings.

A fully defined map with all such information is persisted in the repository with a specific identifier, and is called a named map. How/where can we use these maps created in the repositories? We can use them to navigate, show and analyze spatial data in a solution developed with Spectrum Spatial or in the application Spectrum Spatial Analyst.

Reference, Spectrum Spatial repository resources guide is here

So, how do we create a map in Spectrum Spatial?

The users have 2 easy ways to create maps in the Spectrum Spatial Repository – where a map is a list of ordered layers, i.e. vectors, thematic and raster layers; and the Repository is to hold the map data definitions that are required by the Spectrum Spatial services – as shown below:

    1. In Spectrum Spatial Manager the users can create maps in the Repository with just one click!
    2. In MapInfo Pro, administrators and designated "sub admin" users can create maps in the Repository - uploading map windows from MapInfo Pro to Spectrum Spatial by using the Spectrum Map Uploader, the MapInfo Pro tool provided with the Spectrum Spatial

    • the Admin users and all the Enabled users can change the Maps "Projects" of Spectrum Spatial Analyst just adding or removing Named Maps of the Spectrum Spatial Repository by using the "Projects Settings>Business Maps" feature
    • Enabled users can add existed Named maps into the Map Projects using the Spectrum Spatial Analyst user interface in "Add Layer>Spectrum Spatial layer"

Let's look at how these 2 procedures above 1) and 2) work.

    1)     Creating maps in Spectrum Spatial by using Spatial Manager is easy and fast!

Spatial Manager presents named resources in a hierarchical tree, with folders that the user can open to see the resources inside as well as details about those folders and resources, such as name, type, and creation date. So users can navigate the hierarchical tree, decide the folder and create a map with this fast procedure:

    • Create> Map as shown in figure 1
    • Select and add the Layers into the map, set the order of the Layers, set the name of the Map created as shown in figures 2 and 3.
    • Set the Map Permissions, see description below

Take care, please, the name of the map must be unique; it is case sensitive and cannot contain the following special characters: / \ : [ ] | * { } ".

Spectrum Spatial Manager also allows the users to rename and delete maps.

    How to set Map Permissions

The Spectrum Spatial Manager user interface allows the admin or sub admin to view and edit all the users and roles that have permission for the resource and to see permissions on the referenced resources. Maps are one of these resources – so the Permission tab of map definition user interface allows to set the permissions to maps as showed in the Figure from 4 to 7.  Permissions on maps are always propagated to layers and optionally to tables.

How to use maps created in Spectrum Spatial

Once the maps have been created, we can use the maps

    • In a web-mapping solution developed with Spectrum Spatial
    • In a map project of Spectrum Spatial Analyst, the application of Spectrum Spatial

The enabled users can add maps to the Map Projects using the "Add Layer>Spectrum Spatial layer" in the Spectrum Spatial Analyst user interface.

    2)     How to create maps in Spectrum Spatial by using Spectrum Map Uploader in MapInfo Pro

The Spectrum Spatial Map Uploader is a MapInfo Pro tool that copies the definition of a map from a MapInfo Pro map window to a Spectrum Spatial server. It takes the information of one map stored in a MapInfo Pro workspace and stores the equivalent information in a set of named resources in the Spectrum Spatial Repository on the server – so it creates a Named Map repository for each map window you want to upload from MapInfo Pro to Spectrum Spatial!

Spectrum Spatial Map Uploader runs only inside MapInfo Pro; it can be downloaded from the Spectrum Spatial section of the Welcome Page, under Map Uploader on the Utilities tab.

Important Note about Map Uploader: this tool does not copy data from the client to the server. Any file based data must exist on the server and be placed under a connection that is created in Spatial Manager before the Map Uploader is used .
