Have you seen your EngageOne Designer / Generate AFP output increase in size following a migration to a later Windows O/S and / or a later Designer version ?

If your AFP output has increased recently , this can be caused by the following :

    Windows O/S font size increase
More recent Windows Operating System versions , such as Windows 8.1 , Windows 10 (including Windows Server 2016 / 2019 variants) have large increases in the standard Windows fonts provided such as Arial , Calibri, etc .
These can be up to 3 times the size on these later versions compared to the earlier Windows O/S Versions of the same fonts provided under Windows XP / Windows 7, leading to corresponding increases in the output fonts produced from these later O/S versions.

    Designer Changes for specific languages
Designer Publish has changed for Design Languages:
    • Arabic  - From Designer / Generate 6.6 SP4 onwards
    • Thai  - From Designer / Generate 6.6 SP8 onwards
.. so that the more accurate "Unicode" encoding is used instead of the previously used Native language encodings.
This ensures Generate output is produced correctly for these languages but does produce larger fonts due to the larger Unicode encoding used.

What can I do to reduce my AFP Output size ?
If your Publication has several fonts / styles, but not all are used to produce the page content for a particular run e.g based on input data or conditional document selection , consider the use of the following

AFPDS Device / Font + Image sections / Minimize embed

By default Newly created AFPDS devices have Font + Image section defaults set to "Embed" , which causes Generate to Embed - ALL - Fonts and Images that have been published from the Publication , regardless of whether they are actually used on ANY of the AFPDS pages or not.

To optimize AFP output filesize , a significant reduction may be achieved if the Publication is republished with AFPDS device settings "Minimize embed" is used instead which results in ONLY the fonts actually used in the output actually being embedded.

As every Publication design is different, please experiment with this setting to see if it helps your output filesize.
You will  likely see an increase in Generate memory  usage with this option but Generate performance will  usually be more efficient due to the smaller output filesize produced - Try it and see!

    Feedback appreciated ..
Have you encountered this - or similar - situations ?
Was the solution in this article helpful ?
